Rat infestation sees Chinese takeaway fined

A CHINESE takeaway has been fined more than £1,000 after pleading guilty to food hygiene offences following a rat infestation.

Rat droppings were found in the food store area, toilet, kitchen and back yard where food equipment was stored at the Fortune Garden in Tile Hill Lane last year.

Environmental health officers visited the takeaway after receiving a complaint of rats running around the back yard.

They also found mouse droppings in the food store area and ants running over the shelves and squashed in the sugar and flour bin.

Inspectors said the back door was kept open throughout the evening which had potentially provided entry for the rodents.

The owners pleaded guilty to three food hygiene offences and were fined a total of £600 at Coventry Magistrates Court.

Selfridges raw milk sales prompts FSA prosecution on food safety charges

Selfridges is being taken to court for potentially putting public health at risk by selling raw milk at its flagship London store, the government’s food watchdog has announced.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) began an investigation last year after Selfridges installed vending machines selling unpasteurised milk supplied by Sussex farmer Stephen Hook in December 2011.

Unpasteurised milk may contain bacteria such as salmonella and E coli, which can cause food poisoning, and the FSA warned at the time that the move was in breach of food hygiene regulations designed to protect consumer health. Westminster City Council was also monitoring what was regarded as a highly unusual situation.

Today the FSA confirmed it would be prosecuting Selfridges and Hook for potentially putting public health at risk. It said in a statement: “Summons have been served to both parties and a hearing date has been set for 6 February at Westminster magistrates court.”

ROME (AP) — An Italian steel executive turned himself into British authorities on Tuesday after being placed under investigation in Italy over environmental and health problems at Europe’s largest steel mill – a case that has become a major headache for the government given the 20,000 jobs at risk if the plant closes.

Fabio Riva, 58, was arrested on a European arrest warrant alleging, among other things, failing to take precautions against work accidents, corruption of judicial acts, poisoning water or food and making false declarations, Scotland Yard said in a statement. He was released on bail and ordered to appear again March 5.
