AFTER six years of hell, carpenter Patrick Meek can finally get on with life after losing his finger in an accident at work.
The joiner, 60, was injured as he was using a nail gun to make pallets in 2007. As he fired a nail into the corner of the pallet, it hit a knot in the wood and ricocheted into the point of his left index finger.

London Fire Brigade is accused of using incomplete figures to justify axing Hornchurch’s specialist fire rescue unit (FRU) – a machine that has saved “hundreds of lives”.
Fire Brigade Union worker and former Hornchurch firefighter Joe Mcveigh, who was based at the North Street station for six years, said the figures released by LFB only tell half the story – because there is no breakdown of which incidents actually required action once firefighters arrived.

Close to 40 per cent are in disrepair

A recent mapping survey conducted by the Jamaica Fire Brigade – in tandem with the National Water Commission – has revealed that close to 5,000 (roughly 40 per cent) of Jamaica’s 13,000-strong network of fire hydrants are out of commission.
This means that almost 1,300 fire hydrants have fallen into the not-working line since the last survey was done six years ago.
