New Zealand has the highest reported incidence of Legionnaires’ disease in the world, a new study has found.

The country’s first national study into the burden of the respiratory infection, a form of pneumonia, found three times the number of cases than previously reported.

The research, led by University of Otago, Christchurch Professor David Murdoch, tested respiratory samples of Kiwis admitted to hospital with pneumonia in search of the bacteria that causes the potentially deadly disease.
