A Bury St Edmunds café owner was given a hefty fine after he pleaded guilty to 17 food safety and hygiene charges and four health and safety breaches.

Richard Bird, who owns the Street Level Café, in Abbeygate Street, was slapped with a £1,000 fine and was ordered to pay costs of £1,730.98 after he appeared at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Nigel Dulieu, prosecuting, on behalf of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said that environmental health inspectors visited the café on May 31 and June 15 where they found food was stored with a risk of contamination, particularly smoked salmon and ice cream at risk of cross contamination.
